55 California organizations call for state audit related to private prison contracts

Advocates and community members from across California have signed on to a letter expressing grave concern over public corruption and misconduct in the cities of Adelanto and McFarland, directed and influenced by the GEO Group Inc. (GEO) a Florida based private prison corporation, to expand immigrant detention in California.

A copy of the letter can be read here.

The letter was delivered to the State auditor’s office, as well as the Governor and Attorney General, ahead of planning commission meetings in the cities of McFarland and Adelanto.

GEO’s misconduct and campaign to influence local politics is extensive and ongoing. Recent reports have exposed the role they played in pressuring the city of Adelanto and McFarland from ending contracts, removing local oversight and paving the way for rapid expansion of detention. Now GEO is seeking to influence local permitting decisions.
